Georgian (Kartuli) belongs to the Kartvelian language family, which is related to the Caucasian languages—it has no linguistic connection to any other known language groups and continue to fascinate linguist around the world. There are three Kartvelian languages: Svan (Svanuri), spoken in the mountains of Svaneti, Mingrelian (Megruli), spoken in Samegrelo, and Laz (Zanur-Chanuri), spoken by Laz people who live in Northeastern Turkey. Georgian is an ancient language with its own cursive script. There are some loan words from other language withs which you’ll recognise, but generally the vocabulary is very specific to Georgian.

The alphabet contains 33 letters which have one-to-one sound relationship. Like the Latin alphabet used in English. It’s interesting to notice that capital letters don’t exist in Georgian language. Traveling independently around Georgia without some knowledge of the Georgian script is extremely hardwork. But most people still speak Russian language, even though the younger generation tends to speak more English, French or German.
